The Diocese of Chichester

Map of the diocese
Map of the diocese, showing the Episcopal Areas, archdeaconries and deaneries over Local Authority boundaries.
Clicking on a deanery (or its name, below) will show churches and parochial clergy within the deanery.
Search for places (eg Chichester), churches (eg Mary), clergy (eg Smith) or postcodes (eg BN3 4ED):

Names of non-parochial clergy such as hospital chaplains are not currently included. Bishops Archdeacons
The search works best with a single significant word or part of a word. Postcodes work with or without the space in the middle.
The search is not case-sensitive and it doesn’t matter about capital letters.

The Bishop of Chichester, as diocesan bishop, has overall oversight of the whole diocese, and retains particular responsibility for the cities of Chichester and Brighton & Hove. He delegates authority to the Bishops of Horsham and Lewes for their respective areas of West and East Sussex. The bishops’ areas are each coloured differently on the map.Details of the bishops

The Archdeacon of Chichester is responsible for the coastal region of West Sussex, including Brighton & Hove; the Archdeacon of Horsham for the rest of that county; and the Archdeacon of Lewes and Hastings for the deaneries in East Sussex. The archdeaconries are outlined in blue on the map. Details of the Archdeacons

In this Diocese the deaneries have ancient names, after some of the oldest parishes. Churches were established in various parts of the diocese between the seventh century (Chichester) and the thirteenth (Dallington, Eastbourne). Deanery boundaries are shown in red on the map: to find the name of a deanery, hover your mouse pointer over it. Click the map for details of churches: or use the accessible list below.

Data Protection policy for searches
Searches of the diocese’s directory data from this page and links/boxes on results pages are logged. We log your numeric IP address, the country in which this is located*, the software you are using to search our data, the page on which you entered your search terms and what they were. We collect no personal data, although your IP address is traceable with the assistance of your service provider. We will initiate this action only where we discover or suspect unlawful or unauthorised access to our data.
Data Protection policy for the directory
In this version of the directory, the diocese publishes the names, addresses and telephone numbers of incumbents, and the names of assistant parochial clergy. This is in accordance with the Data Protection Register entry of the Board of Finance, and advice given by the Information Commissioner under the Data Protection Act and the Freedom of Information Act:
It is often believed that the Data Protection Act prevents the disclosure of any personal data without the consent of the person concerned. This is not true. The purpose of the Data Protection Act is protect the private lives of individuals. Where information requested is about people acting in a work or official capacity then it will normally be right to disclose.
In accordance with that advice, it is planned to enhance the information presented to include names and telephone numbers of statutory parish officers and lay ministers. This enhanced level of information is subject to agreement within the diocese.
Further information is available on parish or deanery websites, and where Church House knows of a website address this is included. The online directory also includes data from A Church Near You, which provides information about churches throughout the country. The Diocese of Chichester is not responsible for data appearing on or extracted from other websites, including A Church Near You.

Office-holders within the diocese are free to request that details are withheld from this online directory, and any such request will be considered sympathetically in accordance with advice from the Information Commissioner and other relevant agencies. Please contact the Communications Officer in the first instance.

* Data Protection legislation means that personal data from the diocesan directory is only available to users located within the European Economic Area. Some ISPs disguise the country an IP address is located in. All AOL users, for example, appear to be located in the continental United States. We cannot circumvent this misinformation, and have to assume that the location is correct. In cases identified as being outside the EEA, we will not disclose personal data. Conversely, various of the British Isles are not part of the United Kingdom and are outside the EEA. It is not normally possible to isolate these small parts of the global network and they are usually identified as part of the United Kingdom. Accessing this data via a UK-registered mobile phone may also result in a United Kingdom IP address. We may release personal data to users outside the EEA where they have been identified as within the UK.
