The Diocese of Chichester | Inter faith

Chichester diocesan inter faith liaison team

Our aim:

To promote inter faith dialogue and collaboration of faith groups in service to their communities.

Our context:

As part of the wider diocesan Support for Parishes team we work primarily within the counties of East and West Sussex and the city of Brighton & Hove within Chichester diocese which consists of 543 churches within 389 parishes stretching from Rye to Chichester and from Brighton & Hove to Crawley. The interfaith liaison team also maintains contact with those working at national and international levels.

Our priorities:
  • Deanery and parish visits with associated mapping and encouragement of inter faith encounter

  • Provision of training and resources: annual inter faith study day, Developing Discipleship module, CME day, etc

  • Building relations with other faith communities

  • Representing the diocese in the partnership of faith communities with local authorities

  • Rigorous theological exploration of the imperative to inter faith dialogue

Our team:

Ms Mary-Jane Burkett and The Revd John Chitham serve as Diocesan Inter Faith Advisers supported by The Revd Richard Jackson from the diocesan Mission & Renewal department and The Venerable Roger Combes, Bishop’s staff liaison.

The advisers serve our Bishops and parishes and work closely with other local and national agencies in supporting church members involved in inter faith dialogue and/or living or working in local communities with those of other faiths.

A diocesan inter faith consultative group meets thrice yearly.

Our resources:

The team members are available as part of the Support for Parishes team to encourage a spirited collaboration with other faith communities that remains faithful to the integrity of our Christian Faith. They welcome speaking invitations from PCC’s, deanery synods as well as civic groups and are keen to identify other resource people to serve with them in this way.

A series of articles and book reviews are available to stimulate Christian engagement with other faiths in the service of local communities. We welcome further contributions to these web resources.
