Disability

Caption:
In November 2006 the Diocesan Synod passed a motion that recognises that disabled people have difficulty in fully participating in the lives of our churches. Church in Society is offering a number of resources to assist local churches in reducing the problems that disabled people experience and offering a warm welcome to everyone.
A generic information booklet on disability, Getting to Grips with Disability is available here.
Synod also called upon churches to undertake an access appraisal of their buildings and a C.Soc document to help in this process is available.
No church is likely to be able to make itself entirely open to the wide range of needs that disabled people present. Indeed, many of our churches are historic and cannot be easily changed to meet modern-day requirements. It is important to undertake an Access Appraisal of your building: a document leading you through a basic appraisal is available here. Accordingly, it is most valuable to draft an Access Statement which sets out the facilities and limitations of your buildings in order that disabled people can be forewarned of any barriers that they face. A document giving a model Access Statement is available here.
