Church in Society

Christians are called to take a responsible role in society and to support those who are less fortunate than themselves. A great strength of the Church of England is that we have a parish system which links all of our churches closely with their local community. The Church in Society department seeks to help Christians and their churches to have an understanding of social issues and to increase their level of engagement with the local community.

As well as providing information on various issues the department is involved with a number of groups and organisations in the diocese; most of the work is of an ecumenical nature. The main areas of work include: the Deaf Church, Church Urban Fund, community development and regeneration, disability (including awareness training and access audits), the Church and the Countryside Group, affordable housing, homelessness, racial justice, church tourism, emergency response, support for people with HIV, confidentiality, and environmental issues.

The adviser, The Revd Barry North, is assisted by a secretary, Helen Swyer.

The department produces a newsletter, C.Soc Voice, twice a year and the most recent edition is here.
